The 8th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards is coming, and it’s the only independent competition for handbags in the world. Entrants obtain the opportunity to submit a personal handbag, and they can compete for a variety of awards granted for handbag excellence.
There’s seven awards in total, and each winner will gain international recognition and prestige will winning many coveted prizes during the event. Held in New York City, the 8th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards ceremony will a blast from the past while expressing innovations of the present and future.
The Event, the Origin and the Recognition
The Independent Handbag Designer Awards was invented to commend and celebrate extraordinary handbag creativity and designs entered from both the United States and across the sea. It was initially created by Handbag Designer 101, and HBDNetwork, the top resource for handbag designers, hopped in. Together, Handbag Designer 101 and HBDNetwork have propelled the Independent Handbag Designer Awards to its eight year, and the event has served as a staple across the industry. The Independent Handbag Designer Awards, abbreviated as IHDA, is considered the sole international design competition capable of discovering, creating and recognizing brand awareness for various and independent handbag and handbag accessory designers.
There’s a lot of hype surrounding the 8th IHDA, and the event’s new sponsor, Guess, is an excellent addition to new and innovative endeavors applied. Reality television will cover the event, and many industry leaders will be available for questions. The application period has already ended, and winners’ names will be announced during an award ceremony located at Manhattan’s SVA Theater. The ceremony will take place on June 18, and the seven awarded categories will be mentioned:
- Best Handbag in Overall Style and Design
- Opitex Best Student Made Handbag
- Bernina Best Handmade Handbag
- Timberland Best Green Handbag
- Feed Most Socially Responsible Handbag
- Audience Fan Favorite Handbag
- (The all-new and seasonal category) Distinctively Denim by Guess
While worldwide recognition is the main-stay for the IHDA, prizes range from in-store and various online displays to top-notch sewing machines from the different sponsoring brands. The seven categories’ winners may be additionally featured within InStyle’s September issue.
Meanwhile, Monica Botkier will obtain the season’s Iconoclast Award—a commendation honoring industry-established names. Previous winners include Judith Leiber, Carlos Falchi and Lulu Guinness. “Handbags,” Botkier said, “mark moments in a woman’s life and in our culture’s history as a whole.” Monica then, upon interview, expressed her passion for the industry, the need for understanding and the event’s wonders:

Emily Blumenthal, the Independent Handbag Designer Awards founder, additionally plans to bring the entire platform beyond the ceremony. Blumenthal has recently initiated work for a reality television program discovering innovative handbag designers for up-and-coming creations and trends. The show, while still in production, has producers seeking virtuous and creative contestants capable of bringing brilliant designs to the program. Personalities expressing groundbreaking and unprecedented fashion are sought after for the program, and the program, itself, will likely be a huge hit.
